Receiving an Accurate Diagnosis
During your initial online or in-person consultation with one of our Pain Doctors, after they have reviewed your medical history and asked you various pertinent questions, they will then conduct or arrange another appointment in order to carry out any necessary diagnostic tests or scans. These may include:
- A pelvic MRI scan
- A psychological assessment
- Nerve conduction testing. (This is designed to measure the speed in which impulses move along a nerve. This helps your Pain Doctor determine how well your nerves and muscles are functioning)
- A pudendal nerve block injection with a local anaesthetic. (If the patient feels pain relief from the block, then it could indicate that the pudendal nerve is root of the pain. Conversely, if the patient is still experiencing pain, then the cause is likely to be a different source. Pudendal nerve block diagnosis is also valuable in helping your Pain Specialist plan future treatment)
Note: as part of a multidisciplinary process, in some instances your Pain Consultant may also refer you to a neurologist, urologist or gynaecologist.
